Primordial  Sound Meditation

 Origins

In the east the greatest value is placed on a quiet mind. A mind that is quiet is sacred, a mind that is quiet has the potential to conceive the birth of all creation.

It has been said by some that "nothing is new". We could say that Primordial Sound Meditation is new. In fact the form we see today, especially the name ~ Primordial Sound, was redeveloped in the 90's by Deepak Chopra and his associates.

The process and source of the tools (mantra's) that we use in this form of meditation however, source themselves to one of the oldest wisdom traditions and bodies of knowledge known to man ~ The Vedas of India.

When Deepak co~founded the Chopra centre for well being in La Jolla, California. He was clear that all other knowledge and programmes created, needed to be based first on the solid foundation of Meditation. That to know oneSelf through meditation, was the most important and potent tools for transformation and the evolution of consciousness possible.

The technique of Primordial Sound Meditation is a merging of the east and west ~ old and new. It is an integration of sacred, traditional legacies and values, blended with present day, contemporary clarity and understanding.

How ?

In Soul~itude, the mind that was once seemingly the source of all pain and suffering, noise and distraction at once returns to its authentic, pristine nature, bringing with it all manner of gifts.

The Whisper of Eternity.

In the silence of my own mind eternity whispers.

Like a wave lapping on the beach a silence caresses my mind into innocent places.

A silence that is filled with depth, passion and potential.

A love that cannot be defined by mortal words.

An experience that transcends the world of form.

Silently, softly, my mind floats like a lilly on a still pond.

Suspended defiantly from the incessant chatter of my worldly concerns.

And in this silence, I feel the web of creation saturated with knowledge and wisdom, as it throbs like blood through my veins.

Bringing with it all manner of good things...

Learning Primordial Sound Meditation is one the simplest, most natural things you could do. Its like learning to walk ~ as if something inside you knows already and has just been waiting for you to make the choice to learn and practice the formality of a process.

Relying on the natural innate quality of your existing attention, you will be given a tool known as a Mantra or "instrument of the mind ", that enables you to take your attention and awareness to quieter and quieter levels until you finally experience the silence that exists between the space in your thoughts ~ you slip into the gap and the value of Spirit begins to express itSelf more clearly in your life and affairs.

If you can close your eyes and sit comfortably for approximately 30 minutes, twice a day, you will have the basic necessities and ability to practice the technique called Primordial Sound meditation successfully and begin to bring into your life experience those most prized qualities of Spirit.

You will learn Primordial Sound Meditation typically over a period of four different sessions. Each session is designed to target a different level of the Meditation practice ~ some knowledge, some experience!

In session # 1 you will learn the basic background history of the technique as well as be given an outline of how this meditation works as a process. Your session may include a video introduction to the technique by Deepak Chopra.

Session # 2 is your personal one on one instruction where you will be given your own Primordial Sound, and specific guidance on how to practice your meditation procedure.

Session # 3 is structured around the verification of your practice, while also focusing on any questions that you may have around your personal experience. It is a group format and will involve a group meditation experience.

Session # 4 is based on "Higher states of Consciousness". Using video format, Deepak Chopra introduces us to knowledge that clarifies and supports the purpose behind our Spiritual journey using the tool of Primordial Sound meditation. Your experience is concluded with time for Q and A, as well as another group meditation experience.

Although format may vary slightly, the structure of the course facilitates meditators with a balance of knowledge and experience to create an environment of comfort and success around their own meditation practice.

Why ?

Content and fruitful is the Soul that sits on the branches of a quiet mind.

Beyond the day to day reality and activity we call our life, most people live with dreams and desires.

When we bring the quality of a meditative mind into our lives we have the ability to not only engage our own conscious creative mind in the choices we make, but we also bring the values of "knowingness and awareness" into those every day choices.

People meditate for many different reasons, some for health, others for more Spiritual value. Whatever reason you wish to meditate for, is the perfect reason why to meditate.

The nice thing about meditation is that you don't even have to believe that it works, or for that mater, even have a reason for practicing it, for it to have an influence your life!

Balance and harmony are just a few of the beneficial symptoms that result when we take the time to know ourSelves experientially through regular meditation ~ when we bring a little of that silence and potential into our every day lives.

Enough studies over the years have shown that those people who consistently meditate will inevitably live more happier, healthier lifestyles.

In the west we have lost touch with the rich tapestry that is our inner life. Primordial Sound Meditation is ultimately a gift and stepping stone to bring us an awareness of our Inner Self that lies beyond the day to day activity, drama and noise we call life.

It is a tool to bridge the gap between the dreamer and the dream, to dissolve the distance between the seer and the scenery.

Ultimately it provides us with a taste of Universal Spirit that lies beyond the values of distinction, diversity and separation. The same ONE Spirit that underlies and orchestrates the whole of creation.

Who ?

When my mind is silent I experience the birth of a new creation ~ innocence.

Primordial Sound meditation is taught throughout the world. Through a series of experiential workshops and residential programmes, qualified teachers are certified by Deepak Chopra and the Chopra centre at La Costa Resort and Spa.

We come from many different backgrounds and interests. Certified instructors are committed to providing you with the knowledge and training to support you in your meditation practice successfully.

My background is a combination of training in the wholistic field, with training in Polarity therapy (a type of body work), Contemporary Rebirthing (integrative breathing technique) as well as some counseling ~ dialogue interaction and of course Primordial Sound Meditation. I began my own meditation practice in 1989 and received my certification in Primordial Sound Meditation in 2001.

I have provided this space in order to capture a few of the questions that have been asked about Primordial Sound Meditation.

Please feel free to submit a question about Primordial Sound Meditation, I will do my best to provide you with an answer...

I am a very religious person but would like to meditate ~ will Primordial Sound meditation conflict with my experience?

There should be no conflict between your present practice and the technique of Primordial Sound Meditation. Accepting or believing any knowledge given in the structure of the course will not usually effect the quality of your religious practice.

Many classic religious practices include different styles of meditation and prayer. With prayer we talk to God, with Primordial Sound Meditation, we have the ability to listen to God. Meditation could even strengthen your existing faith ~ the rest of the knowledge is just detail.

I want to learn how to meditate, but am not interested in contorting my body into positions that seem unnatural and difficult. I exercise enough already!
You do not have to practice yoga or any other types of body postures to be successful with Primordial Sound Meditation. As long as you can close your eyes and sit comfortably, you'll have the necessary basics to have a successful, lifelong, meditative practice. Yoga, that uses body postures is, simply said, a way to prepare the body for receiving the silence of that we would experience in Primordial Sound Meditation.
Do I have to accept Deepak Chopra as my Guru in order to practice Primordial Sound Meditation?
No! In fact my feeling is that Deepak is not interested in any aspect of becoming a Guru for anyone. Deepak, developed the Primordial Sound Meditation Technique ~ its up to us to practice it on a regular basis and enjoy the benefits that come from the practice, not the teacher!
I'm not sure if I can spend 30 minutes a day ~ twice a day in meditation?
I too never thought I would spend that much time when I first started to meditate. However, once I began to see the benefits the process had on my life, my commitment was validated. Sometimes we can make more time by simply getting up a little earlier in the day. I have heard of people who even park their car and meditate in it, just to create the space and time to get their meditation in. You need to do whatever you can to make it work for you ~ even 15 minutes, twice a day would have a profound influence on your life if you were regular with it, even 5mins twice a day would have some sort of influence...
Will meditation open me up to the influence of evil Spirits!
No! In fact meditation is the safest place you could be! Its like coming home, which is for most people the safest place to be in their life. When we are in meditation we are sitting in the safety and comfort of our own silence, which of course is a link to universal silence ~ the silence of God and the womb of creation.
I heard you had to stop your thoughts in order for meditation to work ~ I don't think I can do this?
There are many misconceptions around meditation in general and for that mater, most Spiritual practices. In Primordial Sound Meditation, we use our Primordial Sound as a vehicle to ride into the silence that naturally exists already, in the mind. We place our attention on our Primordial Sound and gradually the mind quietens down, and we slip into the space between our thoughts, which is naturally silent. This form of meditation is not about stopping thoughts but instead using thought itself as a vehicle to move to other layers of the creative process.
What is a Primordial Sound?
We are surrounded by primordial sounds. Waves on the ocean, birds in the trees, the sound of the wind ~ all of these are considered primordial sounds. They have a vibration, that is both innocent and natural, they have no association or definition to speak of. When you learn to use the Primordial Sound technique you will be given a very special sound and vibration that has been calculated for you, from your birth data. The sound you will be given is the sound of the Universe at the time of your birth, and has the effect of drawing your attention back to the gap, which is the source of all creation.
Will I loose myself in this Gap?
The only part of yourself that you will loose in the gap is those aspects that are not intrinsic to your nature. Once we start to realize the gap and Spirit as the Source of our true nature, we begin to let go of those other labels and more premature identifications of who "we think we are", most of which are based on our past conditioning. As long as we have a body, we will always come out of meditation and be brought back to what appears to be our day to day reality ~ each time, with a little more awareness of who we really are.
I'm worried if I meditate I will become to withdrawn from the world ~ I don't want to be a "monk in a cave..."
The purpose of Primordial Sound Meditation in particular is not to live as a monk in a cave, but instead to enrich not only our Spiritual life but also our day to day life in general. In fact the more you participate in the activity of life, the more balanced your meditation practice will be. We want to improve the quality of our lives by using Primordial Sound Meditation as a vehicle for this transformation. We use Primordial Sound Meditation to improve our lives progressively to levels of success and intimacy not previously experienced before and then we just enjoy life to its fullest possibility.
